Carved into rose-red rock, Petra is one of the world's most compelling archaeological landscapes. The Nabataeans settled here more than two thousand years ago and built a prosperous trading city supported by sophisticated water systems. The experience usually begins through the Siq, a narrow sandstone gorge that opens dramatically onto the Treasury. Beyond it, trails lead to the Street of Facades, theatre, Royal Tombs and the Monastery, with a new perspective around every bend. Comfortable walking shoes and enough time make a real difference.
